Today’s Lenten devotion is an event that takes us back to Mary and Martha’s house. The same Martha that complained to Jesus that her sister was not helping her in the kitchen when Jesus and his disciples were there visiting. This time she complains that Jesus didn’t get to her home in time to save her brother.
I think a lot of us are like Martha, so caught up in our stress and troubles and blame God instead of realizing God is with us and has the power to turn things around for good. There are so many things in life that make us anxious. Like the frustration we feel when we’ve say yes to too many favors from other people or the loneliness we feel sitting in an empty house because the kids are grown and gone and even the guilt we feel from not wanting the responsibilities of taking care of aging parents. And yes like Martha the hurt we feel when losing a loved one, which is the worst of all. And all we do is complain to God of all our troubles instead of asking him for help.
In the story Jesus shows Martha who he is by raising her brother from the dead and in just a few more days after this story Jesus himself will rise from the dead. And if God has the power to raise the dead back to life then you know he has the power to take our pain and suffering away too. He wants to show us this power and love he has for us. All we have to do is ask.
If there is one thing I have learned in all my years of living through difficulties it is that God loves me and only wants what’s best for me. And he loves you too. As we get closer to Easter Day I pray you will meditate on this verse too and remember he is always with us and here to comfort us in our sorrows and give us his peace when life gets just a little too much for us to handle.
