How to do Bible Journaling When You Can’t Draw

One of my favorite tricks is incredibly simple—trace it! Tracing gives you the confidence to add beautiful images to your Bible without having to draw them freehand. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how I used this easy technique to create a meaningful Bible journaling page with watercolor pencils.

Preparing Your Bible Page with Gesso

Before I started tracing and adding color, I prepared the page with a thin layer of clear Gel Matte. If you’re new to Bible journaling, Gesso works like a primer for your page. It helps prepare the thin Bible paper for watercolor pencils and other art supplies and can help reduce how much color soaks through to the other side.

I applied a light, even coat over the area where I planned to journal and let it dry completely before moving on to the fun part—adding the design

Adding Color and Tracing the Design

I started by adding color to the background. To create the sun, I simply colored the area with a watercolor pencil, then used a Blender Pen to soften and blend the color for a watercolor effect.

For the words, I made it just as easy—I printed the lettering from my computer, placed it behind the Bible page, and traced it. No hand lettering or drawing skills needed!

And voilà! A beautiful Bible journaling page created with a few simple supplies and an easy tracing technique.
